Conscripting Bodies, Constructing Authority: The Museum of the Bible on the National Mall

February 13, 2020 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
Haines 39/Zoom,

The Museum of the Bible on D.C.’s national mall was founded and funded by the billionaire owners of Hobby Lobby. From the start, the museum has been controversial in the national press and in the field of biblical studies. Through a close examination of the museum’s exhibits and its collection of archaeological and historical objects, biblical scholar Jill Hicks-Keeton will discuss whose Bible is represented, whose bodies are conscripted into its narrative, and why it matters.

Jill Hicks-Keeton (Phd, Duke University) is Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Oklahoma. She is the author of Arguing with Aseneth (Oxford University Press, 2018) and co-editor of The Museum of the Bible: A Critical Introduction (Lexington Books/ Fortress Academic, 2019).
