SUMMARY:Lucas Cranach and Martin Luther: Sacred Art at the Dawn of the Reformation
DESCRIPTION:The allegorical paintings and altarpieces that Lucas Cranach made in Wittenberg during his association with Martin Luther reveal a Reformation that is different from the one we know in books.  This lecture examines the iconography of some of the earliest protestant artworks\, made by some of the greatest artists of the German Renaissance\, with an emphasis on the paintings that Cranach made at the epicenter of the Reformation. \n  \n\nGregory Harwell lives in Los Angeles has taught Northern Renaissance and Baroque Art History at UCLA since 2011.  He writes about Renaissance and Baroque art\, numismatics\, religion and history\, and is currently working on a book about the French painter Chardin. \n  \n  \n[gravityform id=”6″ title=”true” description=”true”]
